One year ago Apple stormed the wireless industry by introducing their touch screen based device, and just over a year later they have released an updated version that adds support for 3G data, GPS and comes with a significant software upgrade. The iPhone 3G looks much like its predecessor from the front, but turn it around and you see that it has a new plastic back and is a bit thicker. Nokia's rock-solid E71 smartphone

Nokia's new E71 is the company's 3rd try at the popular "BlackBerry" form factor of business smartphones. The original Nokia E61/E62 handsets had the right basic shape, but were thicker and overall bulkier than those from the competition at the time. The E61i improved on that, but still wasn't quite capable of going toe to toe with the best on offer from the likes of HTC and RIM. But with the E71, Nokia has shown that it can be a leader in this space. The E71 has a great spec sheet, a slim and solid body, and the powerful S60/Symbian system lurking inside. We give it a thorough thrashing to see how it holds up.

Samsung Innov8

Samsung held a holiday showcase Wednesday at a San Francisco studio. Typically, these things are reserved for our lucky New York City colleagues, so we were very happy to see Samsung grace us with such an event. The holiday decorations were also welcome, considering they matched the frigid San Francisco summer weather outside. For the most part the cell phone news was nil, but we did spy a couple of previously announced handsets that we had yet to see in the flesh. One was the Samsung Innov8, aka the SGH-i8510, which the company announced almost two weeks ago. The loaded camera phone offers an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink feature set in an attractive slider design that's reminiscent of the Nokia N96. The black styling is attractive, and even with all its features it manages to stay relatively slim at 4.19-inches tall by 2.12-inches wide by 0.68-inch deep. It also has a solid, comfortable feeling in the hand and the slider mechanism appears to be sturdy.

New Sprint U680

The "latest" EVDO Rev-A USB modem for use on the Sprint MobileBroadBand EVDO network is the U-680.

Actually, its not that new. Its the same Franklin CDU-680 that 3Gstore.com has been selling with Sprint EVDO service since Sept. 14, 2007 - nine months ago!

Sprint will be selling the U680 for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate, but you can save $20 because 3Gstore will be selling it for $29.99 after rebate!

There really isn't anything different about the Sprint U680 except that it has a Sprint logo instead of a Franklin logo, and that customers can now request that be insurance be added to their monthly bill to cover loss or damage. Aside from that, the Sprint U680 offers no improvement over the Franklin CDU680 we've already been selling.
